Freshman year in high school (14 years old). I had to wear them in class to see the board. By Junior year I had to wear them all the time.

I was diagnosed astigmatic at age 9, wore glasses for one year or two, then was said to have good sight, so I abandoned them.

Two years ago, I fell really ill and my sight began worsening again (because of illness or the insane medication I had to take I don't know), and was diagnosed myopic on July 2003.

So, I've been wearing glasses for one year only.

Had glasses since I was four years old. I was far-sighted back then, with an astigmatism and a lazy eye (now the eye is not nearly as lazy, but the astigmatism is still around, and my left eye is near-sighted, while my right eye is far-sighted). I still remember being at the dinner table and hearing my mom say to my dad, "See, Bill, how her eye is drifting off like that? We have to take her in." The conversation led to a dr. visit, and my first pair of glasses.

    Heck... I **still** need 'em!

Been afraid of going to the doctor's 'cuz I don't REALLY wanna know how messed up my eyes *truly* are.

unfortunately, not until like 3/4 years ago...<thank god for computer eye strain>

I lied at every eye test since I was a kid....finally started buying clear glass ones!!! cool thing is...I still have them, so when I need a new look, I just wear them over my contacts!

Well you must need them pretty bad to like me ... J/K I had eye surgery at age 2 and received my first pair of glasses a couple months later. I wear them all the time. The funny thing is, that I have wanted to wear contacts for soooooo long ... Well finally the day I am told I can wear them, my son's dad is told he needs glasses. I died laughing, becuase I had predicted it to my mom earlier in the month.

Must have been in the Fifth Grade, so 10 years old, when I realized how ridiculous it was for me to move from my seat to a front row seat to copy off of the blackboard. And it wasn't the first time either. So it took me a while, because I remember being in Mrs. Linn's Science class and wondering why I kept breaking so many glass samples whenever I tried to look at them through the microscope.

I've been wearing glasses since junior year in high shool, couldn't see the board from the back row. I can wear contacts but am usually too lazy to do so.

I was 13 years old and a freshman in high school. It's been 12 years now and I've gone back and forth between glasses and contacts. I need them for distance but tend to wear them all the time now-a-days (as arms length seems to be distance enough for me to need them). I prefer glasses as I tend to forget to put the lenses in before I apply my makeup and glasses are easier to deal with in my opinion.

I was in 5th grade when I got my first pair of glasses. It was funny, most of the kids at school that got glasses got them around 4th and 5th grade. Luckily my eye sight isn't that bad, so I can go without wearing them--- though you wouldn't want me driving a car without them.

Wore glasses from when I was little up age 14. Now I'm starting to feel like I need them again, I keep holding things farther away!

I was about 7 or 8. Huge blue plastic square frames. The pink oval ones came a year later. <sigh>

I was around 14 and waiting for a bus. Many different lines went past the bus stop, and I had to wave when the bus I was meant to get on was approaching (to make it stop), but although I was at the bus stop, I missed my bus because I was unable to read the name of the destination on the front of the busses going by until they were basically at the bus stop, and I didn't like waving at every single bus that went by. I had my first pair of glasses a couple of weeks later.

I was in 6th grade. I was a little bully with a leather jacket and glasses. My teacher used to call me "squinty" before I got them. I used to take them off when I would hang out with people because they were as I call them "John Lennon" style.

    18. needed them when i was 17. took me a year of listening to classmates tease me for squinting at the chalkboard. i had always had fantastic vision up to that point. and i am determined to rid myself of poor sight someday (although i love my glasses so) -- anyone heard of the book "Take Off Your Glasses and See"?

My brother (7 years older) got glasses when I was 7 and I thought he was so cool that I wanted glasses too but my eyes were fine. Then when I was 9 I really did need glasses and I was so exited to finally get my own. I was only supposed to wear them for seeing the blackboard at school and seeing distances. My dad made fun of me when I wore them and made me self-conscious about them and because I was so shy I was afraid to take them out in class. Then the most popular boy in school (and was in my class) also got glasses the same week I did so when I saw him put his on I felt better about putting mine on. Stupid kid I was.

I think I had a negative attitude about them as a child because of the way my dad made me feel.

9th grade, i could read the blackboard for the most part, but not those silly projector things the teaches would write on. My folks made me get these really dorky huge plastic frames, so i would use them just long enuff to read the board. Didn't have to wear them all the time till me mid 20's, tho i did mostly since bout 21 just cuz it was more convenient & i had a bad habit of breaking them when not wearing them!

Once about 6 or 7 years ago i lost a lens & spent a year before i got another pair - i coulda swore i needed a lesser prescription after that time too.

Curious, is that kinda like what that book is about?

Ambleopic (sp?) at age three. The story goes that, being sickly at the time, I was in an oxygen tent. Me Ma says that she thought I was looking at her but figured out I was staring at a drop of condensation inside the tent. She took me to Dr. Jerros
and he set me up with some teeny tiny tortoise-shell horn-rims.

Dude, I had Battlestar Galactica glasses when I was 10. They were SO HOT! I later realized they were dorky so I accidentally-on-purpose set them on the radiator and let them melt.

the teacher thought I wasn't paying attention, when in reality i couldn't see what she was writing on the board. :0(

I was in the third grade ... bifocals. It was traumatic. Except that I'd had no idea that everybody else could see the blackboard or stuff on the playground!

(I was a preemie. Wonder if that made a difference? My son, also a preemie, wears glasses, but didn't need them until late high school.)

Got them when I was 31, probably computer related. Near-sighted. Had 20/10 vision most of my life. Wanted glasses as a kid.

Hate contacts the whole sticking something in my eye. Got a really bad migraine once from wearing them doing computer work for too long.

I think my cat Spike needs glasses. He's far sighted; sometimes he can see things from far off, but can't see something right on a plate. He's a red-head, so I think tiny round tortoise shell would look great on him.

I was 8- It was positively tragic to have to wear bifocals in the third grade. At least I could see the board! The frames were those big plastic '80s varienty with a blue tint and silver cresents on each side.

I was eleven years old. Let me tell you, I was a little bothered by the fact that I needed to wear those things...until I got a pair with the photo-gray lenses. One of the hot girls at school saw those on me and asked if she could try them on... I slept with them under my pillow that night... and had to buy a new pair in the morning. (Just kidding about the sleeping with them part)

Wearing glasses put an end to my sports playing days, though. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Now I was able to focus my attention on music and I've never regretted it.

    not even two years old!

i was 20 months old. i used to think that i was born with glasses -- and i thought it odd that mostly old people had glasses. i thought: "well, being born with glasses was more common a long time ago."

and i hated going to the eye doctor. i thought they were going to give me shots in my eyes. i would crawl under the furniture in the waiting room and scream bloody murder. i'd wrap my limbs around the legs of the furniture and hang on for dear life.

    my poor mother...

5th Grade. I sat at the back of class and kept getting in trouble for asking what the teacher wrote on the board.

I couldn't wait to get contacts, but then ditched them when I realized that glasses were so much cooler.

i was five. i hated wearing glasses b/c there were made fun of , made it hard to play sports and swim ( i grew up on a lake and if i swam without my glasses couldn't see to get back to shore) hmm, guess i didn't hate glasses as much as i hated needing them; i'm pretty blind. i didn't get contacts until i was in my thirties and i loved them b/c they corrected my vision better, didn't jiggle when i galloped my horse and for the first time i could really see in a mirror what i looked like without glasses. but now i need bifocals and thankfully glasses look good

i was in 6th grade and we were really poor so i had to pick from two frames cuz they were the only ones the state would buy for me. the ones i got were huge and round and calico looking. i picked them up on my way to florida so on the drive down i remember being so excited iw as crying. i never knew that cars head lights were actually smaller. i didnt know a lot of stuff was actually there. then when i got back to school i was all excited to show everyone and then everyoone started to pick on me and call me a freak. i barely ever wore them, unless i needed to . even now i dont wear them that much cause i feel like i look like a dweeb, but my contacts hurt so i have to. im getting used to them though....

no one is gonna read this entry cause it is long and because there is a million entries and no one is reading the other peoples they are just leaving their own, but whatever. weeee, im off.

mandolyn, i read your entry and was truly touched by it. many years ago,my 8 yr old son was visiting relatives and it was discovered that he needed glasses(long story). i felt so badly that i hadn't known he needed them. he was an excellent student, a well behaved and bright kid and never complained. years later, i asked him why he had never told me and he said, "mom, i thouhgt everyone saw the way i did" it broke my heart.
